Congratulations to the Jr. Lady Blackcats for winning the Marion Invitational Softball Tournament Championship! They defeated Carmi, Du Quoin, Harrisburg, and Johnston City to take the 2014 Championship!

    GOREVILLE FFA TOP 10 IN THE NATION!

Congratulations to the Goreville FFA Chapter for being named a National Finalist - Ranked 2nd out of 408 Chapters! The Goreville FFA Chapter competed in the National Chapter Award sponsored through the National FFA Organization. The National Chapter Award is made up of three divisions: Student Development, Chapter Development, and Community Development. The Goreville FFA and Pontiac FFA Chapter were named Co-State Champions in Chapter Development and the Goreville FFA is now ranked 2nd overall in the State of Illinois! The chapter was recognized at the State FFA Convention and received a "Section Winner" plaque and a first place "State Winner" plaque. Goreville now advances to the National Level and results will be announced in late July. In addition, the Goreville FFA Chapter won the State Cooperative Activities Award sponsored through the Farm Bureau and Growmark and was recognized at the State FFA Convention. As the winning school, two Goreville FFA Members will receive a free trip to Washington DC for a week.

Congratulations to Goreville Blackcats Shon Messmer for being named 1st Team All-Conference in baseball; Caleb Miles for being named 2nd Team All-Conference in baseball; Haley Darnell for being named 2nd Team All-Conference in softball; and Sydnee Rushing for being named 2nd Team All-Conference in softball! Also, congratulations to Sydnee Rushing for being named All-South!

     GOREVILLE HIGH SCHOOL NAMED "SCHOOL OF DISTINCTION"!  

Congratulations to Goreville High School for being named a 2013-2014 National Beta “School of Distinction”! The award coincides with the increasing amount of honor students added annually. This national award recognized Goreville High School for their “commitment to academic rigor and dedication to preparing students for college and career readiness”.  The National Beta Club is the nation’s largest independent, non-profit, educational youth organization.


  LADY BLACKCATS TRACK QUALIFIES FOR STATE!  

Congratulations to the Goreville High School Lady Blackcats 800 Meter Relay Team as they have become the first relay team in school history to qualify for the IHSA State Track Meet! Members of the Lady Blackcat Relay Team include Madison Sopczak, Sarah McLain, Jasmine Luna, and Roxanne Thompson.

  BLACKCATS AND LADY BLACKCATS REGIONAL CHAMPIONS!

Congratulations to the Blackcats AND Lady Blackcats as they are BOTH IHSA Regional Champions! The Lady Blackcats defeated Hardin County 10-0 while the Blackcats defeated Cobden 5-3. The Lady Cats then defeated Dongola 12-0 to advance to the "Sweet 16" IHSA Sectional Final while the Blackcats were defeated 10-7 in extra innings by Webber.  The Lady Cats fell to Trico in the Sectional Championship.

   SNELL NAMED BDC "MVP"; DARNELL NAMED "CAPTAIN"

Goreville High School senior Zeke Snell was named the "MVP" of the Black Diamond Conference while senior Haley Darnell was named "Captain" of the Black Diamond Conference!  Snell was named "MVP" last year as well.

  LADY CATS "ELITE 8" IN STATE!    

The Goreville Lady Blackcats defeated Wayne City in overtime 41-40 to claim their 4th straight IHSA Sectional Championship!  The Lady Cats fell to Central A&M in the IHSA Supersectional to end their season 22-10.

  STATE CHAMPIONS!    

The Goreville Jr. Blackcats defeated Cairo in the IJHSAA State Finals to win the school's first basketball State Championship! The Jr. Cats end the season with a school record in wins at 25-1!  To view the article in the Daily Republican, click here.

  BETA CLUB HONORS STUDENTS WIN AT STATE!   

Congratulations to the Goreville High School Beta Club for winning several awards at the Illinois State Beta Convention in Springfield! Aaron Gunther - 1st in Computer Skills; Aaron Brenningmeyer - 2nd in Computer Skills; Jalynn Ashford - 2nd in Art/Drawing; Sydnee Rushing - 3rd in Accounting; Mello Baker - 3rd in Geography; Noah Ward - 2nd in Geography; Reagan Goins - 1st in Poetry; and Christine Bryant, Jalynn Ashford, and Aaron Brenningmeyer - 1st in Special Talent. The Goreville Betas also won 2nd in Art/Banner and 2nd overall out of over 30 schools from across the state!

BLACKCAT CHEERLEADERS GO TO STATE - 1ST TIME IN HISTORY!

For the first time in school history and in only their second year of competitive cheer, the Goreville High School Blackcat Cheerleaders, led by Coach Melissa Robertson, qualified to compete at the Illinois Cheerleading Coaches Association (ICCA) State Competition in Springfield!

 JR. BLACKCATS SIC CHAMPIONS! 

The Goreville Junior Blackcats defeated Shawnee, Cobden, and Meridian in overtime to win the Southern Illini Conference Basketball Tournament Championship!  8th Grader Braden Webb scored a Goreville Junior High School record 50 points in the championship game.

The Goreville Jr. Blackcats defeated Jonesboro and Cobden to win their 10th consecutive Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association Regional Championship!

  SNELL AND CAVINS HITS 1000!    

Goreville Blackcats Zeke Snell and Kyefer Cavins have scored over 1,000 points in their high school varsity career!  Snell hit his 1000th point against West Frankfort at the Mid-Winter Tournament and Cavins hit his in the Regional Championship game.

  WEBB HITS 1000!    

Goreville Jr. Blackcat Braden Webb made school history scoring over 1,000 points in his junior high school varsity career (3 years)!  He ended with 1,290 points and led the Jr. Blackcats to their first ever State Championship!

 MASSEY NAMED 2013 ICA SECTIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR!

Goreville High School Lady Blackcats Softball Coach Shanna Massey was named the 2013 Illinois Coaches Association Sectional Coach of the Year!  Coach Massey led the Lady Blackcats to a 3rd Place in state finish in 2013 and a State Championship in 2012.

  MILES SIGNS WITH GREENVILLE COLLEGE    

Goreville High School senior Caleb Miles signed a National Letter of intent to play baseball at Greenville College next year!  Caleb helped lead the Blackcats to 2 Regional Championships.  Caleb is the son of Chad and Libbie Miles.

    BUSINESS SKILLS TEAM WINS SEVERAL AWARDS  

Congratulations to the Goreville High School Business Skills Team for winning several awards at the Business Skill Competition Day at Shawnee Community College! The individual award winners are as follows: Aaron Brenningmeyer-1st in Deskto...p Publishing and 1st in Word Processing 1; Cassandra Jones-1st in Word Processing 2 and 3rd in General Business; Ethan Childers-2nd in Accounting 1; Tucker Manier-2nd in Networking Concepts; Brandi Billingsley-3rd in Electronic Presentations; Aaron Gunther-3rd in Computer Concepts; Dallas Melot-3rd in Word Processing 1; and Sydnee Rushing-3rd in Accounting 1.

    DARNELL SIGNS WITH LOGAN  

Lady Blackcat Senior Haley Darnell signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball on a full scholarship at John A. Logan College in Carterville, IL! Haley was named 2nd Team All-State, All-South, and was named "Captain" 1st Team All-Conference in the Black Diamond Conference. She scored over 1,000 points in her career as she helped lead the Lady Blackcats to 4 Regional and Sectional Championships. She is also a four year starter in softball and helped lead the Lady Cats Softball Team to the school's first ever State Championship in 2012 and a 3rd place in state finish in 2013.  Haley is the daughter of Matt and Missy Darnell.

The Goreville Blackcats defeated Zeigler-Royalton to earn their 2nd straight IHSA Regional Championship!  They fell in the IHSA Sectionals to end their season 18-13.

   WYSE TEAM QUALIFIES FOR SECTIONALS!    

Congratulations to the Goreville WYSE Team! They placed 2nd overall in the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Regional Competition as a team and advance to Sectionals March 12th at SIUC! The individual winners were: Chemistry – Billy Ward 1st & Ian Davis 3rd, Math – Connor Seavers 2nd, English - Raechel Ward 1st, and Physics – Dallas Mellot 2nd.

Goreville Lady Blackcat Haley Darnell hit her 1000th point against Benton making her only the 11th Lady Cat in school history to achieve this milestone!

The Goreville Jr. High Blackcats baseball team defeated Nashville to win their FIRST EVER Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association (SIJHSAA) STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

 JR. BLACKCATS AND JR. LADY CATS REGIONAL CHAMPS!

The Goreville Jr. High Lady Blackcats softball team defeated Unity Point to win their 2nd straight Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association (SIJHSAA) Regional Championship while the Jr. Blackcats baseball team defeated Vienna to win their 3rd straight SIJHSAA Regional Tournament!  The Lady Cats were defeated in the semifinals of the IJHSAA State Tournament.

   10 JR. BLACKCATS SIC ALL-CONFERENCE!  

The State Champion Goreville Jr. High Blackcats baseball team had a school and conference record 6 players chosen by the Southern Illini Conference coaches as "All-Conference" while the Jr. Lady Cats placed 4!  For the Jr. Cats, Braden Webb, Chance Duringer, Tanner Dunn, and Brodie Lennon were named 1st Team All-Conference and Peyton Geyman and Peyton Massey were named 2nd Team All-Conference.  Braden Webb was also named "MVP" of the conference!  For the Jr. Lady Cats, Macy Goins, Hannah Link, Cheyenne Walker, and Hollie Link were all named 1st Team All-Conference.

HOMECOMING 2013-14    

The Goreville Homecoming Game and Ceremony were held on January 17-18 this year.  Congratulations to Aaron Brenningmeyer and Haley Darnell for being named Homecoming King and Queen!


 

GOREVILLE SCHOOLS GETS HIGH-SPEED INTERNET

Clearwave Incorporated has completed its installation of fiber optics to supply Goreville Schools with high-speed internet!  This is the latest accomplishment in a 3 year strategic plan to update technology resources for the entire district.  The new high-speed access takes the information capacity from 7 MBps (megabytes per second) to over 70 MBps.  This will provide teachers with the instant resources to better utilize their SMARTboards and other new state-of-the-art technology that the district has added over the past 3 years to enhance students' engaged learning. 


   ROBISON WINS COOPERATIVE STATE TEACHER OF THE YEAR!   

Goreville High School Agriculture Teacher and FFA advisor Jeff Robison has been named the 2013 Illinois State Cooperative Teacher of the Year for leading the Goreville FFA chapter to a top 10 ranking in the nation!

BRYANT SINGS NATIONAL ANTHEM FOR IASA CONFERENCE

Goreville High School freshman Christine Bryant was the feature entertainment for the Illinois Association of School Administrators' (IASA) 49th Annual Superintendent's Conference where she led over 400 school administrators in the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the National Anthem during the 1st General Session in Springfield. Dr. Webb is currently the President of the IASA.

Congratulations to Lady Blackcat Volleyball players McKenzi Schaede and Madison Sopczak for being named Black Diamond Conference "All-Conference"! McKenzi was named 1st Team All-Conference and Madison was named 2nd Team.

BASS FISHING 9TH IN STATE!

The Goreville Blackcat Bass Fishing Team, for the 3rd consecutive year, qualified for the Illinois High School Association State Bass Fishing Tournament in Carlyle, IL!  J.T. Russell and Shon Messmer hauled in 19.5 pounds of bass to take 2nd place overall in the IHSA Sectional Tournament. Shon Messmer also won the "Big Bass" award by catching a 6.12 pound bass during the competition. Mason Bishop and Connor Seavers hauled in over 13 pounds in their boat.  The team thanks their volunteers Steve Sanders, Chad Morgenthaler, Randy Spurlock, Mont Bishop, Joel Trovillion, Bennie Adams, B.J. Barger, Randy Hudson, and the Johnson County Bass Club for all of their help this season.  They then placed 9th out of 54 schools in the State Bass Fishing Tournament held at Carlyle Lake.

 GOREVILLE COACHES HONORED AT STATE

Three Goreville basketball coaches were honored by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Asociation as "Coach-of-the-Year" for Region 21 due to their outstanding 2012-2013 seasons.  High School Girls Basketball Coach Mike Helton (31-2), Junior High Girls Basketball Coach Teresa Cash (24-3) and High School Boys Basketball Coach Todd Tripp (26-5) received their awards at Illinois State University in Bloomington, IL.  Coach Helton was also named Coach-of-the-Year by the Southern Illinois Coaches Association and will receive his award this fall.

GOREVILLE FFA 2013 STATE CHAMPS IN COOPERATIVE AND HERITAGE

The Goreville FFA Chapter has been named State Champion in Cooperative and Heritage Activities Awards sponsored through the Illinois Farm Bureau and Growmark!  Projects including honoring our veterans with a "Where the Heroes Walked" display and our students restoring vintage tractors for community members were highlighted in the selection process.  The Goreville FFA will be recognized at the Illinois State FFA Convention and receive their awards. In addition, four Goreville FFA members will receive a free trip to Washington, DC to represent our school and Illinois State FFA in national ceremonies.

22013 LADY BLACKCATS 3RD IN STATE!

The Lady Blackcats defeated Illini Bluffs in the IHSA State Tournament to take 3rd Place in State! A parade and reception will be held when they return to Goreville on Sunday at approximately  4 PM.  The Lady Cats end their historic season at 18-15.

GOREVILLE FFA NAMED TOP 10 IN AMERICA!

The Goreville High School FFA Chapter was named the Section 25 Champion, State Champion in Community Development and was ranked 3rd overall in the State of Illinois out of 408 schools and has now been named "Top 10 in the Nation" - the only school from Illinois! The chapter competed in the Program of Activities also known as the "National Chapter Award" sponsored through the National FFA Organization. The National Chapter Award is made up of three divisions: Student Development, Chapter Development, and Community Development. A State Winner is named in each division and the overall point leader is named the Illinois Banker's Plaque winner which carries the title of the number one chapter in the state. The chapter was recognized at the State FFA Convention in Champaign, IL. One Section Winner is chosen from each of the 25 Sections and then the top five in the state are ranked and placed. The chapter also won the State Cooperative Award and the State Heritage Award for the first time in school history!

   6 BLACKCATS FOOTBALL BDC ALL-CONFERENCE!


The Vienna-Goreville Football Program placed several players on the Black Diamond Conference "All-Conference Team" including a record 6 from Goreville!  Dallas Melot, Kyefer Cavins and Austyn Frassato were named to the 1st Team, Connor Seavers was named 2nd Team, and Jacob Hosier and Brandon Pyle were both named Honorable Mention.  Cavins, Melot and Seavers were all named All-South and Melot was named All-State.

DATELINE SPORTS TO BROADCAST BLACKCAT ATHLETICS

Dateline Sports has recently entered into a partnership with Goreville Community Unit District #1 to become the broadcast "Voice of the Goreville Blackcats!" The Web site (www.datelinesports.com) will stream a select number of Goreville boys and girls high school basketball games as part of the agreement. The tentative schedule includes games from the Goreville Invitational and Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament as well as at least 10 other total boys and girls games.  Click the file below to listen to the Goreville Blackcats commercial!



GOREVILLE SCHOOLS NAMED TECHNOLOGY "SHOWCASE SCHOOL"

 

Goreville Elementary School and Goreville High School have been notified by SMART Technologies based out of Calgary, Canada, that they have been chosen as a "2012 Showcase School"!  The award is based on a competitive application process where school districts from around the world describe their commitments to adding technology and engaged learning in classrooms.  In 2010 and 2011, Goreville Schools added state-of-the-art whiteboard interactivity technology to their Pre-K, Elementary, Middle School, and High School as well as extensive training for their teachers on using technology to enhance learning.  The school was recently recognized by the Chicago affiliate of SMART Technologies when they traveled to Goreville in April to tour the facility and host a SMART Experience event for the region.  The event featured Goreville School's certified "SMART Exemplary Teachers" Rachel Jenkins and Melissa Robertson as well as Kindergarten Teacher Dana Harris and High School Business Teacher Diane Kirby where they provided inservice to parents and community members as well as teachers and administrators from school districts across Southern Illinois on the effective use of technology in their classrooms.  Due to the award, Goreville Schools will now receive technology training and professional development scholarships; exposure in global SMART publications and marketing materials; a profile in the SMART Showcase Schools web directory; a "Showcase School" display for their school facility; access to low-interest loans for technology purchases; and special opportunities to test new technology products from SMART as they are developed.  Goreville joins other Showcase schools from around the world including schools from Finland, Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom and their profiles can be found at www.smarttech.com/showcaseschools.  You can also view the article on the SMART Experience Event hosted by Goreville Schools in the Goreville Gazette here.
